Urban Farm

Geographically, the city area is very limited, so the concept of traditional farming is very difficult in urban areas. Meanwhile, land conversion of agricultural land into non-agricultural land could barely containable in line with the development needs of the citizens. Urban farm can be used as an alternative.

Of course farming techniques conducted in urban areas intensively with technology that enables high productivity on land is very limited. The development of urban farm techniques currently possible to do this, for example by verticulture techniques, hydroponics, or other cultivation techniques technological nuances.

The benefits derived from urban farm, in addition to meeting the needs of city residents consumption also benefits the beauty and cleanliness of the environment in urban areas who use a lot of fossil fuels. Merger between agricultural science and urban landscape will provide another nuance to the farm that had seemed dirty.

Urban farm has a sense, a unit of production activities, processes, and marketing of food and other products, in water and on land is done in the city and in the suburbs, applying methods of intensive production, and recycled (reused) natural resource and residual municipal waste, to produce a diversity of livestock and crops.

Urban farm as an industry that is located in the city (intra-urban) or on the outskirts of the city (peri-urban) of a small town or a big city, which is growing and growing, distribution and diversity of the food and non-food products (nonfood products ), mostly using natural and human resources (land, water, genetic, solar energy and air), services and products that are available in and around the city, and in turn as a provider of human resources and material, some services and products for urban areas itself.

Based on some understanding of the above it can be concluded that urban farm means farming is an activity that can be farming, animal husbandry, fisheries, forestry, that had the location in the city or on the outskirts of a city, with the process of production (yield), processing, selling, and distributing various kinds of products of food and non-food uses of resources and aims to provide and fulfill the consumption of people living in a city.

The role of urban farm for food security and safety happen in two ways: First, increase the amount of food available to people living in the city, the second, the availability of fruits and fresh vegetables to city consumers. Therefore the promotion of urban farm as an energy-saving local food production. Urban farm in central and suburban areas are food security practices.

In some cities of the world are implementing the concept of urban farm and welcomed by residents as part of an urban development concept of clean environment. While in the United States which has launched urban farm, including the city of New York. Hopefully urban farm used as part of the needs of city residents in addition to the need for housing and the building of a supermarket and mall.
